Have you ever been walking in a wild, uninhabited landscape and suddenly come across a small pile of bent nails? For many years I have wondered about this phenomenon. The answer was provided by a biologist friend when he identified courting clawhammer birds as the source of this detritus. The mating ritual of these shy birds is little understood but the potential for serious harm during the courtship is thought to be only slightly less than in humans.
