The two note sound of the shingle is simple and hypnotic. A wave  advances and a wave retreats. The end of one sad sea shanty is a prelude to a new song. Is the struggle worth it? Perhaps. Is the effort futile? It doesn’t matter. It can’t be helped.  What matters is when you hear the rough voice of the sea and imagine music.
